Life after the visa

The NISS (Número de Identificação de Segurança Social) registers you with the Portuguese Social Security system (Segurança Social). It is required if you plan to work, run a business, or access social benefits in Portugal. The application is made online at a Segurança Social Portal, and your NIF is required to apply. Processing typically takes one to four weeks.

A Portuguese bank account is essential for paying rent, utilities and government fees, and for receiving income locally. Most banks require your NIF, passport, proof of address in Portugal and proof of income or employment. Some banks (such as Activobank or Montepio) are more straightforward for new residents. The process can take from a few days to a couple of weeks depending on the bank and your documentation.

The SNS number (Serviço Nacional de Saúde) registers you with Portugal's national health service and assigns you to a local health centre (Centro de Saúde). It gives you access to subsidised medical appointments, prescriptions and referrals. Registration is done at your nearest health centre using your NIF, residency certificate and proof of address.

If you hold a driving licence issued outside the EU/EEA, you must exchange it for a Portuguese licence after becoming a resident. The exchange is handled through IMT (Instituto da Mobilidade e dos Transportes). Depending on your country of origin, a driving test may or may not be required. If you hold a driving licence issued in an OECD or CPLP country, you may be able to drive in Portugal without exchanging it immediately, provided the legal conditions are met. EU/EEA licences do not need to be exchanged but must be updated with your Portuguese address.

The CESD (Cartão Europeu de Seguro de Doença) — known in English as the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) — entitles you to medically necessary healthcare in other EU/EEA countries under the same conditions as local residents. It is issued by Segurança Social once your NISS is active. Useful for travel within Europe.

Setting up electricity, gas, water and internet in Portugal requires your NIF and a Portuguese bank account (for direct debit). Electricity is supplied by EDP or Endesa among others; gas by Galp or Endesa; water by the local municipality. Internet providers include NOS, MEO and Vodafone. Contracts are typically signed online or in store, and activation can take between 24 hours and two weeks depending on the service.

Once you have a permanent address in Portugal, you must update your fiscal address (morada fiscal) with the Finanças (Tax Authority). This ensures that all official correspondence — tax assessments, government notices, your residence card — reaches you at your Portuguese address. The change is made online via the Portal das Finanças using your NIF and access credentials, or in person at a Finanças office.
